Bizkaia Talent plants over 100 trees to offset CO2 emissions and recover the native forest

- The Basque association has planted five species of trees in the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve with the aid of international professionals from the Relocation & Be Basque Dual Career Centre service and postgraduate students from the Be Basque Ambassadors programme.
On February 19, as in previous years, Bizkaia Talent scheduled the planting of 130 native trees in the Undabaso Forest in Muxika, Bizkaia province, at the heart of the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, to offset the carbon footprint generated by the association. The activity was run together with the Lurgaia Foundation, with which the association has signed an agreement to promote biodiversity conservation and management of the area’s natural heritage.
This time, Bizkaia Talent brought together 20 highly-qualified international professionals from the Relocation & Be Basque Dual Career Centre and 10 postgraduate students from the Be Basque Ambassadors programme, who attended the event along with some family members. They joined the Bizkaia Talent employees in planting five species of trees: 68 oak trees, 25 birch trees, 13 hawthorns, 14 rowan trees and 10 field maples.
The professionals and postgraduates taking part in the scheme were from 12 different countries: Colombia, Ecuador, Italy, Jordan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Pakistan, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Turkey, Venezuela and Spain. They work at the following organisations: Adesio, AZTI-Tecnalia, Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3), BCAM – Basque Center for Applied Mathematics, Biofisika, Idom, Ikerbasque, ITP Aero, Lookiero, Osteophoenix, Proquinorte, The University of the Basque Country
The Lurgaia Foundation
The Lurgaia Foundation is a private not-for-profit organisation that aims to foster biodiversity conservation and natural heritage management: species, habitats, associated ecological processes and the landscape. It currently manages around 200 hectares of land in the Reserve that are undergoing restoration to create future forests.
